How Our Hand-Carved Solid Wood Bathtub Reached Over 700,000 People on Reddit
When we shared our most ambitious project on Reddit— a hand-carved bathtub made from a single massive log—we never expected it to explode. Yet in just two days, it racked up over 714,000 views, nearly 7,000 upvotes, and over 400 comments from the r/woodworking community. Here’s how it happened, what we learned, and why this moment means so much for our little workshop.
A Dream Carved from a 3-Ton Tree
Back in 2019, we had an outrageous idea: carve a full-sized functional bathtub from a single solid piece of wood. It took us over two years of on-and-off work to finish, mostly due to drying time, epoxy filling, and the sheer effort it takes to shape a 3-ton white poplar trunk into a tub.
We began rough carving right in the forest to reduce the weight enough to move it. Then came a long kiln-drying process. The hardest part? Filling thousands of small and large cracks with epoxy resin. The tub was sealed with marine-grade epoxy and 2K varnish, the same type used on yachts. For the finish, we chose a bold custom red stain – a controversial decision, but one we felt gave it a luxurious, almost cinematic presence.
As we joked in the comments: “Most people love it. My mom, on the other hand, absolutely hates the red!”
Posting to Reddit: What We Said
When we finally posted it on r/woodworking, we didn’t even manage to include the caption correctly at first. But the photos and craftsmanship spoke for themselves. Soon, the upvotes came flooding in.
We followed up with a description, explained the build process, and jumped into the comments to answer every question we could. The Reddit community was not only supportive—they were incredibly curious. We talked epoxy chemistry, design challenges, wood grain, and even where the tub might find its home.
The Crowd Reacts
Redditors had opinions. Here are some of our favorite comments:
“I love it, and wish I could afford a house or entire hotel to build around this tub.”
“Red stain reeks of luxury… this is the kind of thing a multimillionaire puts in their guest’s private bathroom.”
Of course, not everyone was on board with the red finish:
“I live in a log home and could see this in my bathroom—if only it was natural or lighter stained.”
“I don’t like red at all… but damn that looks good.”
We responded with honesty:
“Yeah, I sometimes think ‘Should I have done it?’, but I don’t regret it, I am very happy with it, it looks amazing. I wanted to bring that vision to life. And I plan to make the next few tubs in natural wood color, and even a burnt black version, followed by red once again.”
The debate over the stain turned into one of the post’s most vibrant threads. It proved what we always believed: real design provokes emotion.
Epoxy, Safety, and Functionality
A few people asked if the epoxy and varnish were safe for bath use. We took this very seriously:
“I checked with the epoxy manufacturer. It’s safe when cured, and it’s fully sealed with marine-grade varnish used on yachts, then waxed with a food-safe hard wax. Water never touches the epoxy directly.”
We also explained that the tub, though functional, is best suited to a statement interior. It’s around 210kg (460 lbs) and not easy to move without special equipment. But it’s sturdy, stable, and keeps water warm far longer than metal or ceramic tubs.
More Than Just a Post
This Reddit moment wasn’t just a traffic spike. It was something more valuable: confirmation. It showed us there is real appreciation out there for our work, our values, and our commitment to making one-of-a-kind sculptural furniture.
One user summed it up best:
“It’s definitely a statement piece. Someone out there will build the whole room around it.”
That’s what Logniture has always aimed to do: create pieces that inspire entire spaces.
What’s Next?
We’re continuing to carve, design, and share our process. And yes—we’re already planning more bathtubs. Natural wood, burnt black, and maybe even another bold statement piece.
If you found us through Reddit, welcome. If you’re just discovering Logniture now, take a look through our collection. And if you’re the right person (or hotel) for this tub, feel free to get in touch.
